Days End Farm Horse Rescue (DEFHR) is hosting their annual fundraiser Holiday Party on Saturday December 13, 2014. This year’s event celebrates their Silver Anniversary—25 years of rescuing horses since their founding in 1989.
DEFHR’s Holiday Party will be held at Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland (www.turfvalley.com), Saturday, December 13, 2014, 6:00 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $80 per person (reserved seating). Formal attire is encouraged to mark this special fundraiser. Guests will enjoy live music by Kevin Burns (www.kevinburnes.com), open bar, fine food, a silent auction, dance music by I.N. Entertainment, a raffle and door prizes.
DEFHR’s Distinguished Equine Citizen Award will also be awarded during the evening. This award is given out annually to an individual exemplifying DEFHR’s vision of a world where humans care for horses with respect, compassion and love. DEFHR is proud to announce that their 2014 award will be presented to Steuart Pittman, Jr., Dodon Farm Training Center in Davidsonville, Maryland.
Pittman has been riding and competing with Thoroughbreds since his youth, and has been working as a professional trainer in eventing, dressage and jumping for over 14 years. In 2010, Pittman and friends formed the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) with the mission of finding second careers for retired Thoroughbred race horses. During the last four years RRP has launched a website, built a steadily growing community, and showcased Thoroughbreds to thousands of potential buyers across several states. Thoroughbred Charities of America awarded RRP its Industry Service Award in recognition of the success of their 2013 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium at Pimlico, which drew a national crowd.
“We currently have 55 horses waiting for adoption, about half of which are Thoroughbreds,” said Caroline Robertson, DEFHR Development Director. “We also have some in rehab, like Frequent Flyer, a 15-year-old Thoroughbred that came in November 10th. We looked up his racing record and found out he won close to $50,000 before ending up at DEFHR. We consider Steuart to be a fellow collaborator in solving the unwanted horse issue, and are thrilled to commemorate his incredible efforts to help find Thoroughbreds new careers.”
Sponsorship opportunities for the Holiday Party are available for businesses. For only $100, individuals can sponsor a horse for the holidays, and receive a hand-painted horse ornament with a picture and story about one of our rescued horses.
Seating for the Silver Anniversary Holiday Celebration is limited, and the last day of ticket sales is December 8, so call today to reserve your tickets!
