Days End Farm Horse Rescue
over 11 Year Relationship
By Susan Rosenberg
(LISBON, MD) – Days End Farm Horse Rescue, the non-profit, volunteer based humane organization, has bettered and saved the lives of over 1,000 horses since its inception. The group currently cares for approximately 110 abused or neglected horses annually. They are able to do much of their good works with the help of generous donations and grants they receive from individual philanthropists and groups. The Snyder Foundation for Animals, who is instrumental in supporting Maryland-based animal welfare agencies, is one of the groups who has continually granted monies to Days End over the years. In fact, Days End received its first ever grant from the Snyder Foundation in 1993 for the development of their Critical Care Program.
That initial grant the Snyder Foundation gave to Days End made a huge impact and continues to shape Days End’s efforts today. Since that early grant, Days End has received additional funds, equaling close to $50,000 from Snyder. These grants were used for the Anderson sling, portable run-in sheds, continued animal care, veterinary expenses and fencing. In addition, they received the “Above and Beyond Award” in 1997, which recognizes animal protection professionals whose daily, hands-on commitment to the rescue and rehabilitation of abused, neglected or injured animals demonstrates a degree of selflessness far “above and beyond” the normal provision of exhaustive and intense rehabilitation care.
“Days End sets the standard for horse rescue in Maryland,” said The Snyder Foundation for Animals Executive Director, Lora Junkin. “We have been grantors over the years to their programs because of the excellence in care that they give to the animals. We are committed to supporting their efforts.”
Grants like those received by Days End are awarded annually. The number of grants given changes year-to-year, but has reached as many as 35 in a single year. Thus far, the Snyder Foundation for Animals has awarded over $1,500,000 to 79 Maryland humane organizations in 21 counties and Baltimore City. Associations and foundations interested in grants must apply through the Snyder Foundation with an explicit request proposal. Awards are generally given out during springtime of the same application year. The Snyder Foundation is one of only a handful of groups that unites and supports all types of animals and animal programs. Their work spans the broad spectrum of education, disaster recovery, spay and neuter programs, education, training and publishing – they support all animals, both wild and domestic.
Through the financial support of the Snyder Foundation, Days End has been able to grow in size and reach – helping to attain many of their goals. This includes bettering the lives of horses in their care, educating people on the plight of abused and neglected horses and how to recognize abuse, as well as, educating the public on the proper care of horses, assisting fledgling rescues to become established nationally and providing disaster services both locally and nationally. Both groups hope that their mutually beneficial relationship continues to grow and continues to save and improve the lives of the horses they help rescue.
