T. ROWE PRICE VOLUNTEERS AT DAYS END FARM HORSE RESCUE
By Vickie Allin
Lisbon - August 18, 2007 - What company is the 10th most giving company in America? In what company do 90% of the employees volunteer? If you answered T. Rowe Price, you would be correct!
One of the ways T. Rowe Price (TRP) gives to the community is by sponsoring service days – days on which employees can volunteer to serve selected local charities on company time. Days End Farm Horse Rescue (Days End) is fortunate to be one of the selected charities. Up to a maximum of 20 TRP employees from across the TRP organization can volunteer for each workday and the Days End workday was over-subscribed. One of the volunteers is selected as the Team Leader, to coordinate the workday. Soren Sonson, the Team Leader for the Days End workday, prepared for the workday by coming with her daughter to a Days End Volunteer Orientation Session. She hit it off immediately with DeEtte Gorie, Days End’s Volunteer Coordinator, because both of them grew up with horses in upstate New York.
On June 14th, the 20 TRP employees converged on Days End to provide a full day of work. Soren said, “we expected to get dirty and we expected to work hard.” And work hard they did!! It was the week before the Spring Carnival, so they helped to clean and fix up the picnic area, including scraping and repainting picnic tables and benches. They also washed tents, raked the grounds, and scrubbed feed buckets. Several volunteers stripped and cleaned the sheep & goat pens (with the unsolicited assistance of the sheep and goats!). Several of the guys went through the stalls removing the metal grates, cleaning them and replacing them. In the course of their work, they learned more about Days End -- for instance, our large animal rescue work. Soren said, “we didn’t know all of what Days End does; it’s not just local.”
About the experience, Soren said, “the fact that 20 people, most of whom had never worked together before, could come together and work so well as a team says something about T. Rowe Price. Everyone had a great time and wants to return. They also felt good that they had accomplished something to help Days End.” DeEtte Gorie said, “the TRP employees were a joy to work with. They were willing to do any task and worked well as a team. We couldn’t have put on the Spring Carnival without their help!”
