NEW FARM UPDATE
5-1-2008 - Hello All!
We’ve arrived! It feels so good to finally have everyone in the same place! The last of our horses and ponies were moved yesterday (Wed.) to the new farm as our emergency response crew went out to impound 7 horses from West Virginia. The Robin’s Nest was finished in the nick of time and these horses are the first to occupy those stalls. GOOD WORK, TEAM!
The last several months have been full of activity, culminated by last weekend’s moving parade. Can I say how grateful we (Days End staff) are for everything you have done for our new farm? Without your efforts we would never have achieved this transformation of a cattle farm to a functional horse rescue facility. It has taken a tremendous group effort and it has been an absolute pleasure working with you. THANK YOU!
That said, we are by no means finished with projects. Following this message is a description of current projects we will be working on this weekend. Our biggest need at this point is for project directors. If you are willing to oversee and coordinate any of these jobs, please let myself or Erin know ASAP so we can meet with you and support you in whatever way we can. Also, we REALLY need to know who is available to help and when you will be coming. For this Sat./weekend, please RSVP to Erin at: erin@defhr.org
We hope to see you on Sat. or Sun. and, while you’re here, be sure to visit our new impounds: Torque, a gray gelding, Urban, a paint stallion, Velore, a bay appendix mare, Wasabi, an appaloosa mare, X-Calibur a chestnut stallion, Yahoo, an appy mare and Zoro, a black colt. Take pride in your hard work and effort that, ultimately, has provided a new beginning for these horses.
See you soon!

Sat., April 5th at 9 am - for our next Farm Operation Committee meeting.
We are fast approaching the moving of our farm operations and have a list of high-priority jobs to share with you. As usual, contact me with the dates and times of your availability so we know how to plan: deette@defhr.org
Our high priority projects for this weekend are:

THANK YOU & HELP NEEDED -
Hello Friends!
Our volunteers have made a big impact on both our existing and new farm locations! The Legacy Barn is being transformed from a cattle shelter to a spacious volunteer lounge, office, wash stall, tack room and feed room. The alley barn is being rebuilt to include stalls and paddocks and a big portion of our storage sheds and run in shelters have been moved. Every weekend a team of committed volunteers come out for a full day of construction which brings us closer to meeting our goals.
I cannot speak of our construction volunteer’s efforts without mentioning the volunteers who have graciously donated food and drinks to fuel their efforts, and the dedication of our barn volunteers who help maintain the daily care of our horses. It has been a pleasure to witness and experience the outpouring of generosity in both the time and resources of our volunteers. It is our sincere hope that the rewards far exceed the giving in the lives of all of our volunteers.
In looking at our immediate and future needs, we continue to ask for help with these tasks:
- Installing ceramic tile and wood laminate flooring.
- Installing kitchen cabinets.
- The tear down and reconstruction of Bubba’s Bargain Barn and our run-in shelters.
- Painting of our storage sheds.
- Scraping/cleaning of the concrete common area and establishing of feeding stations.
- Moving of the carport.
If you, or anyone you know is knowledgeable in installing floors or kitchen cabinets and is willing to help, please contact me ASAP. We are hoping to have these projects completed by April 6th.
If you would like to join our volunteer teams on the Sat. and Sun. work days, contact me to be placed on our email list for further information on project dates and plans.
In addition to construction we are looking for individuals who are willing to be a part of a volunteer office cleaning team. This is a flexible position with availability for evenings or Sundays. Let me know if you are interested!
Also needed, lunch donations for the next four weekends to feed our volunteer teams. We have a fully functional kitchen and are capable of storing food and heating meals. Donation ideas include:
-
Canned soda/juice
Lunch meats and cheeses
- Bread/rolls
- Veggie/fruit trays
- Salads/salad dressings
- Chip/snacks
- Soups, etc.
Lunch donations are needed for March 22nd, March 29th, April 5th, April 12th and April 19th. If you are able to give towards this need, please contact me with the date and items of your donation so we know how to prepare.
With only five weeks left to go before our entire farm operations are moved to the new location, our need for volunteer help is larger than ever. We cannot express our gratitude enough for the hundreds of hours our volunteers have put in to this endeavor. S It truly is taking a village…a volunteer village, to raise this farm!
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Hello Team!
The office and volunteer lounge is looking great! Earl and Terry made good headway on insulating last week and the weekend crew were able to put up our ceiling and hang paneling in the office. Looking at this week our immediate needs are for someone to tape and mud the dry wall ceiling in the office, finish hanging the drywall in the lounge (small patch sizes), then tape/mud and continue to hang paneling.
Note: We will be laying ceramic tile in the entry to the lounge and hardwood floors in the office. If you have experience doing either or both, PLEASE contact me ASAP so we can plan these projects. Thanks!
Other projects include leveling the floor that will house the tack room and storage room. Framing the feed room, tack room, storage room and building stalls in the alley barn. Sat. and Sun. will be big work days starting at 9 am but if you are available during the week, we would sure love to have your help. We would like to know your availability so email me at, deette@defhr.org with the dates and times that you will be coming (including Saturdays and Sundays).
I may be sending another notice closer to the end of the week but feel free to contact me with any questions.
Everyone has done such a wonderful job and Erin, Brooke and I have enjoyed working with you. Thanks for everything and we’ll see you soon.

3-10-2008 - Hello All –
Just wanted to say Thanks to everyone who is working hard on our weekend projects! As I was getting my normal work done today I was peeking in on the Saturday crew and was so impressed with how far we have come. Someone said to me – why are you working so hard on the volunteer lounge before the horse stalls. Well – it’s simple, I have every bit of faith, before we move, the stalls will be completed. It is a priority at this new farm that our volunteers have a place to be comfortable as well. It’s you that make our operation happen and we hope that you will love the space we have made just for you!
A special thanks to those who are involved – I look forward to having lunch with you all in it and just taking a much deserved break.
If anyone is available during the week we could use you. Dave Thomas has come aboard during our time of need and is heading up our maintenance/ building projects. Please let us know if you can come out and help.
Thanks!!!

On Tues., we will be sending out a recap of this weekend’s accomplishments and a list of priority projects for the next week.
2-14-2008 - Nail by nail, board by board our new farm is taking shape thanks to the efforts of our dedicated and talented volunteers. Over the past two weekends they, along with a few of our staff members, have built a new subfloor for the volunteer lounge and an office. The framing of our Legacy
barn is a work in progress with a volunteer team committed to tackling the job this weekend and beyond.
Our Alley barn will also be worked on and the crews of men and women who are working on these projects get hungry from their long days of work.
The purpose for this message is to ask for help in fueling our volunteers. We are hoping to provide lunches on the weekends: our busiest time of the week for working on these projects. Our new office has a fully-functioning kitchen and we're looking for donations of non-perishable foods as well as deli meat, bread, etc. that would be available to our volunteers for lunch
or snacks. Drinks would also be appreciated and your donations would be tax deductable.
If you're willing to provide for this need, please contact me at:
deette@defhr.org or call: 301-854-5037
2-11-2008 - A special thank you to our volunteers who helped with our many projects this past weekend, Feb. 9th. Our office was successfully moved and we’re in the process of unpacking boxes and establishing a new office environment. It is very exciting and we are enjoying our new surrounds very much.
A team of volunteers were able to dismantle duct work and other supplies needed for our Legacy barn from the demolition farm. There is still work to be done and we’ll have projects continuing there for a few more weeks. Stay tuned for the details and it would be great if you could plan now to help with Sat. work projects until April 26th.
There were other teams of volunteers working to finish installing the sub floor in the Legacy barn which will be our volunteer lounge and an office. They then went on to erecting wall frames and establish the plan for the ceiling, doors and windows. At the same time, construction began on our alley barn (will be named “Robin’s Nest”) which will hold stalls and paddocks. Both of these projects need volunteer help and if you have experience with framing and building, please let me know if you’re available to help.
Now, more than ever, we appreciate our volunteer’s time, skills and hard work as you help Days End move forward. I speak for all of the staff when I say “THANK YOU” and we look forward to working more with you over the coming weeks and months.
2-5-2008 Today's projects include the framing going up in the "Legacy" barn as we section off the volunteer lounge, the vending area, the wash stall and the feed room. Click on plans for each building to see how it all fits together.

2-4-2008 - The weekend was a wonderful success!! SO MUCH WAS ACCOMPLISHED! Thank you to all the volunteers who came to help this past weekend (2/2 & 2/3)(regardless if you were at the Rt144 farm, New Farm or the one we are picking up wood etc... from OR YOU WERE HELPING WITH THE FUNDRAISING AT THE "GRAPES OF HOOVES" MEETING.) We could not DO ALL THE THINGS WE DO WITHOUT YOUR HELP!!
Saturday started with the FOC committee meeting (Farm Operations Committee) and then the crew leaders took their group of volunteers to work on their to do list for the day.
A big BIG thank you goes to Hicks Abbott a volunteer contractor who ran the pipe in the legacy barn with the help of two volunteers;
Erik Anthony, our volunteer electrician who fixed a broken electrical wire;
Corey Freeman and his crew from Grade Line construction who trenched all day so we could run the pipe out to the fields where we will be putting water troughs for the horses and pluging in electric heaters to keep them from freezing;
Denny Clemm and Johnny Clemm who insulated the Farm Managers Office and leveled the floor so it is now ready for the tile flooring and the wall covering which they should get finished up today or tomorrow. Jerry Howe also organized a crew on Sunday to clean out the Machine SHop where donations of desks, chairs, cabinets, shelving and misc. other items had been stored to help allow for more accessability and make them ready for use.
Brooke and Erin took a crew of about 20 to the farm that is donating fencing, doors and many other items. The framing was also finished in the Main House/Office by Josh and Bill and looks GREAT!! We are really on a roll.
1-31-2008 - From DeEtte our volunteer coordinator - VOLUNTEERS; Have you heard that we’re moving? A 58 acre cattle farm down the street from our current facility is in the process of being converted to a fully operational Days End Farm Horse Rescue. Our deadline for moving is April 26th and there are dozens of projects to be completed between now and then.
We are committed to giving as much time as posible to inform you of project dates and volunteer needs but, if you’ve ever been to the farm, you will understand that things happen quickly and change even faster. Like today, for instance,
we found out yesterday that an equine facility was going out of business and has offered Days End to take whatever supplies (lumber, building materials, etc.) we want and can take. After a visit to the farm today it was determined that we would benefit greatly from this offer and we are now needing 20+ volunteers to help tear down and move the materials. It is possible that this will be happening this Sat., Feb 2nd starting at 10 am. Though the plans are not confirmed (we’re waiting to hear from the farm owner that that time works for him), I wanted to send a plea for help to our DEFHR friends. I will be either confirming or canceling the project on Friday, Feb. 1st after 10 pm, so check your email for details.
Again, our need is for 20+ volunteers on Sat., Feb. 2nd at 10 am to help move farm supplies. Additional trucks and trailers are needed, so if you can donate the use of yours, please bring it! No orientation is needed, this is a one-time project and any and all are welcome to participate.
This is an exciting time for Days End! Stay tuned for further updates.

1-14-2008 - Construction has Begun! Erin's Dad started working on the office in the barn. Saturdays are proving to be great days for organizing and packing. We will be packing again this upcoming Saturday.
1-10-2008 - Plans are being put together and volunteers are cleaning our all the barns and buildings and sorting items for quick removal.
1-2-2008-Happy New Year to all. Plans are moving forward. Our zoning attorney is meeting with the with the county today to apply for our Agritourism Permit approval We hope to know something within a few weeks
12-20-2007-The big field divider fencing was started and poles driven into the ground.
12-19-2007-FOC met last night and put together action plans to get things together in regards to packing up the current farm and . Please contact Brooke Vrany or Erin ochoa if you would like to help on one of our action teams.
12-18-2007-Farm Operations Committee (FOC) will meet tonight to formulate plans and specific objectives for getting ready to move to new farm.
12-15-2007-The Tennant house is now occupied and plans have been made to set up the new facility for moving more horses over.
12-14-2007- The tennant house was completed for move in.
12-12-2007- Four horses, Apollo, Cayenne, Bruce & Fastgo were moved to the New Farm.
12-10-2007-We have been so very lucky to have been offered the possibility of leasing a 58 acre farm with the option to buy! The NEW farm is located in Lisbon right around the corner from our current farm facility. Only a couple miles seperate the farms from each other.
We have been looking into this paticular farm since the end of August and negoiations with the owner and putting together information for the county zoning officials for "permitted use" approval have been slowly moving forward since that time.
On December 10, 2007 a agreement of conditions was made between the Board of Days End Farm Horse Rescue and the representative we have been negoiating with on the property and the process can move forward.
We have been working with Sang Oh, a howard county land use attorney and Susan Marmon a civil engineer who have been donating their time to help us put together a plan for the Howard County Zoning officials to be assured that our programs are permitted at this new farm which is in agricultural preservation.
We should soon have the plans together to submit to the county for the zoning board to review and hopefully approve. Part of Our plan may be seen at www.defhr.org/Newfarmplan1-20.pdf
The part of our plan that is permitted as right is the care and husbandry of the horses as well as having a caretaker on the property so that part will be put into motion shortly.
