Days End Farm Horse Rescue Deploys Help
in Wake of Hurricane Katrina

By Arlene Hatton

Allan Schwartz, co-founder of Days End Farm Horse Rescue has been called in to help with large animal rescue in areas ravaged by hurricane Katrina. Yesterday he was contacted by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and will be leaving Lisbon, MD to join forces with other animal rescue teams such as EARS (Emergency Animal Rescue Services) and VMAT (Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams).

Part of Days End Farm Horse Rescue’s mission is to provide disaster services. Currently, their horse trailer is being stocked with equipment which includes an Anderson sling that can be used to air-lift horses as well as many other types of slings that can be used for smaller livestock. They carry a 300 gallon water tank, a generator, rescue glides to get downed horses onto trailers and to medical clinics, a mud rescue kit, portable fencing, and many medical supplies as well as various other equipment needed for animals in emergencies.

Allan Schwartz has been doing various types of animal rescue for 15 years and is certified through Rescue 3 International for swift water rescue and high and low angle animal rescue. He is also a member of VMAT-2 which is one of several specialty teams established by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and trained to respond to natural and man-made disasters. Allan plans to head out to areas hit by hurricane Katrina on Tuesday, August 30 at approximately 4:00 pm.
