Lisbon: On stand by since before Hurricane Charley hit the Florida Coast,
Allan Schwartz, received the call August 17th from Nan Stuart of Code 3 Associates, “Bring
your equipment,” she said, “we just received a call from Hillsboro
County Humane Society in Tampa, Florida, they need our help rescuing livestock
and horses, many are hurt and injured.”
As Allan gathered up the rescue equipment, Kelley Harrington, another animal
rescuer from the A.S.P.C.A. in New York met Allan at Days End Farm at midnight
on August 17, and they left to join forces with Code 3 Associates in Tampa.
Since Florida was hit by Hurricane Charley, many animals as well as people
have been injured and displaced from their homes. The Red Cross is there
to help the people but the local shelters are depended on to handle the
animals. In many cases they are not set up to handle the massive influx
of animals,
in addition to the ones currently in their care, as is the case at the
Hillsboro Humane Society in Tampa, Florida since Hurricane Charley
arrived on the scene.
Part of Days End Farm Horse Rescue’s mission is to provide disaster
services in the mid-Atlantic region. Their horse trailer is stocked
with equipment which includes an Anderson sling that can be used to air-lift
horses
as well as many other types of slings that can be used for smaller
livestock. They carry a 300 gallon water tank, a generator, rescue glides
to get downed
horses onto trailers and to medical clinics, a mud rescue kit, portable
fencing, and many medical supplies as well as a multitude of other equipment
needed
for animals in emergencies.
Allan Schwartz has been doing various types of animal rescue for 15
years and is certified through Rescue 3 International for swift water
rescue
and high and low angle animal rescue. Allan and Kelly expect to arrive
at the
Hillsboro Humane Society in Tampa, Florida on August 18 and plan
to stay as long as their help is needed. You can find out more about Days
End
