Days End Farm Honored With 2005 Equine Welfare Award

Lisbon, Maryland – December 12, 2005 – Days End Farm Horse Rescue, a non-profit, volunteer based animal welfare organization, is the 2005 recipient of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) equine welfare award, the Lavin Cup. Named for AAEP past president A. Gary Lavin, VMD, the award is presented annually to a non-veterinary individual or organization that has demonstrated exceptional compassion or developed and enforced rules and guidelines for the welfare of the horse.
Founded in 1989 by Kathleen and Allan Schwartz, Days End Farm Horse Rescue is dedicated to the rehabilitation of abused and neglected horses. The all-breed horse rescue in Lisbon, Maryland has pioneered work in the fields of equine rescue and rehabilitation, educational programs, community outreach, and animal disaster recovery. Through the dedicated efforts of its volunteers and contributors, Days End Farm has assisted over 1,000 abused and neglected horses in Maryland and across the United States.
AAEP presented the Lavin Cup to Days End Farm Horse Rescue at its 51st Annual Convention in Seattle, Washington on December 6, 2005. Accepting the award on behalf of Days End were founder and Chairman, Kathleen Schwartz, and Board President, Terri Zseleczky. Headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, the AAEP was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and welfare of the horse. The AAEP reaches more than 5 million horse owners through its 6,500 members worldwide.
“On behalf of the volunteers and donors of the Days End Farm Horse Rescue, I am honored to accept the Lavin Cup,” said Kathleen Schwartz, Executive Director and co-founder of Days End Farm. “This prestigious award from the American Association of Equine Practitioners is a tribute to the men, women, and young people at Days End Farm who have shown their commitment to help abused and neglected horses. We will always be proud of having been the recipient of the Lavin Cup.”
Past winners of the Lavin Cup include the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, Inc., the American Quarter Horse Association, and the California Horse Racing Board.
