FOSTER CARE

Become a foster parent of an animal residing at DEFHR by joining our Foster Care Program. You can be a foster parent yourself, or give this honorary title as a gift to the animal lover in your life!

You may foster a horse, petting zoo animal (goat, sheep or donkey) or one of our lovable barn cats.

The Foster care program benefits the caretaker and the animals we have rescued. It helps instill a love of animals, as well as a sense of responsibility for their care. This program allows adults and children to bond with a horse of their choice for a period of time while they learn about horse care, grooming, feeding and cost of ownership. This program is a worthy first step toward horse ownership.

This program also allows parents the opportunity to give their child a horse without the immense financial burden of ownership. Foster caretakers are given priority consideration at the time the horse they foster becomes adoptable. They must, however, prove their ability to care for the horse satisfactorily and be able to provide a good stable home. This is not a guarantee that if you foster a horse you will be able to adopt the horse. You must still meet all criteria necessary to adopt a DEFHR horse.

The fee involved to become a Foster Care participant is minimal. Participants are encouraged to visit the horse and provide hands-on care, including daily maintenance, grooming and riding (if the horse is rideable). The program helps Days End fulfill its mission by providing care for a rescued animal, creating an awareness of horse abuse and neglect, educating people on the proper care of horses and helping support the financial needs of the animals.

FOSTER CARE OPTIONS:

Plan A - $50.00 per month
This entitles the foster care participant to visit the farm once a week, groom and care for their foster horse.  You may bring treats or any horse-related items for them as long as they are not on a restricted diet.

Plan B - $75.00 per month
This plan entitles you to the same as Plan A with the addition of riding the horse once a week.  To participate, you must be capable of riding the horse you plan to foster and the horse you foster must be rideable.

Plan C - $100.00 per month
This plan covers most of the farrier care and feed necessary for your foster horse and allows the caretaker to help Days End Farm more fully with the expenses of the fostered horse. It includes riding twice a week.

All the above foster care plans include the foster caretaker's right to have priority consideration at the time the horse becomes available for adoption.  This does not negate the need for an application to be signed and approved.  All adoptions must follow standard adoption procedures.
