S.O.S. (Save Our Seniors or medically challenged horses)

The following horses have found quality homes despite their limitations!!

Arnie
20+ Years Old
15 Hands
QH
Gelding
He can be used as a companion only. He has ringbone and can no longer be ridden. He is very friendly and loves to be groomed. He gets along well with other geldings and would love to have a person of his own.
Athena "Attie"
4 Years Old
16.3 Hands
Belgian
Mare

Athena came to us this winter as a potential program horse. With her wonderful temperament and extreme promise under saddle she was proving to be a pro. She was even a star during pony rides at our Open House. Unfortunately she starting coming up lame at the trot and in circles. Upon evaluation from our vet and x-rays it was confirmed she has a sidebone. This condition can be common in drafts and over time as the bone calcifies Athena may be sound again. This may be several years. Until then she needs someone who can let her be a companion and enjoy loving her on the ground. She tends to be an Alfa mare, but all the horses in her herd follow lovingly.

Baby Boomer
33 Years Old
16.2 Chestnut
TB
Gelding
Boomer arrived at Days End in December of 2004 very underweight. He was signed over by animal control because he needs the specialized feeding the farm can provide. He is a very sweet older guy who loves attention.

Briana
Briana is a sweet and quiet older mare that has been there and done that. She's very laid back and enjoys attention. She is a wonderful addition to the farm. You couldn't ask for a nicer, gentler mare.

Calvin
17 Years Old
15+ Hands
Palomino QH
Gelding (Gelded 7/99)

Calvin arrived as a starvation case. His suspensory ligaments no longer offer the support they should. Calvin can no longer be ridden but would certainly offer his love and undying affection to his a sponsor. He has a wonderful home with Lisa Santos and her two other horses. He keeps one entertained as the other is being ridden.
"Diva"Darcy
13 Year Old
QH/Arabian
Mare

She has advanced navicular and is currently field sound as a result of corrective shoeing. She is not ridable except by a light person for no more than 15 minutes (for circulation purposes). She has been fully sponsored at Days End by Ron and Kathryn Dorman who come up to the farm three times a week to walk, groom and spoil their "Diva" Darcy. She is an easy keeper and maintains her weight on ai. She cannot be turned out on lush pasture
Faith
17 Years Old
15.2 Hands
Quarter Horse
Mare

Faith suffers from allergen induced asthma. Very quiet, good with children and has been ridden when allergies are not active. Although Faith is a large horse, she loves children and enjoys being groomed. She loves her new friend who gives her daily special attention. Faith has been fully sponsored by Donna and Jenny Wilner on their farm. She is doing really well and can be seen at the local shows in the spring-- winning ribbons with her little rider and best friend, Jenny!

Gidget
11 Years Old
10.2 Hands
Bay Cross Pony
Mare

Gidget is a timid mare but once you spend time with her she relaxes and enjoy attention. Due to a heart murmur her exercise is limited. She would make a good companion pony.

Good Golly
20 Years Old
16 Hands
Chestnut TB/Hanoverian
Mare
Good Golly came to us in 2000 when Montgomery County Animal control impounded 11 horses that were being neglected and starved. She was thin and pregnant when she arrived four years ago. She delivered a beautiful baby named Zephyr who has since been adopted. Golly later found a good home as well, but regretfully this year due to issues of there own, her adopted parents returned her to us as they no longer had the time to care for her. She cannot be ridden due to stifle issues, but would make a wonderful companion to another horse. She is as sweet and as laid back as they come! Wonderful ground manners!

Hannah
15 Year Old
15.3 Hands
Chestnut TB
Mare

Hannah needs an intermediate to advanced confident rider who is gentle on the reins. She has good ground manners but can be frisky at times when ridden. Hannah is very willing to work and enjoys affection. She is capable of doing light trail work only.

Henna
19 Years Old
15.2 Hands
Dark Bay TB
Mare

Henna is an older mare with a lot of personality. She has been ridden under saddle w/t/c and knows her stuff but is extremely rusty. She is limited to LIGHT riding only due to arthritis in her hips and hocks. Henna can be a little pushy on the ground but is fine with someone who instills consistency and patience with her.

Hobo
25 Years Old
10.1 Hands
Bay Pony
Gelding
Hobo is a wonderful, quiet, child's show pony that was returned to Days End after his previous adopter lost the use of her pasture and could not long keep him. He has "Cushing's" disease and is on daily medication. He is doing very well and is a favorite with children.

Jasmine
22 Years Old
15.2 Hands
Appaloosa Red Roan with blanket on rump
Mare

Jasmine can do light riding, english, western, and trail. Jasmine is very good with small children but they will have to know how to steer. Jasmine is almost totally blind. Jasmine has been fully sponsored at Days End and she is awaiting a move to her new home when the renovations are complete the summer of 2000. She loves her adopter's little girl and can be seen getting many hugs from her when she visits.
Nora
21 Years Old
14.1 Hands
Morgan
Mare

Nora is a lovely bomb proof mare that gets along with everybody. Due to allergies her diet needs to be closely monitored, as well as her respiration. On hot days she needs cool bathes and a few puffs from her Albuterol inhaler. Nora recently suffered from an eye injury which has left her blind in her left eye. With close monitoring Nora would be able to do light riding and is a dream under saddle for any rider. She has perfect ground manners and is suitable for any age to work with. This mare has a huge heart and would make a wonderful horse for anyone looking for a trustworthy companion.
Oakley
12 Years Old
10
Hands
Palomino Pony
Mare
Oakley came to Days End Farm last July and has just completed her court case. She had extremely overgrown hooves, which have misshaped her hooves. She is getting along great, but will need continued reconstructive hoof care every 4-6 weeks. Oakley is the star of the farm! She comes to the fence to great you in the mornings, has to be in the center of all people action and loves getting groomed and walked around the farm. She has excellent ground manners and is wonderful with children. She can no longer be ridden or driven due to the structure of her hooves.
Onyx
9 Years Old
11.2 Hands
Welsh Pony
Mare

Onyx was sponsored in January 2000. Her hooves are trimmed every 4-6 weeks as necessary. She is currently living in Hampstead and enjoying her new life with her horse buddies and small human friends.

Payden
20+ Year Old
10.2 Hands
Chestnut Pony
Mare
Payden arrived in July of 2005 and is currently in our rehab program recovering from starvation and possible founder. Her prognosis for recovery is good. She is currently on multiple small meals daily. She is very sweet and makes small winnies when the feed cart approaches. She is very gentle and likes he baths and being groomed.
Powder
7 Years Old
13 Hands
Pony
Mare

Powder suffered for most of her young years with laminitis. She is currently sound but may have recurrent abcesses as a result of her previous laminitis. She can not be housed in lush pastures because her laminitis could reoccur. Powder has been fully sponsored at a lovely farm. She has recovered enough to do light trail rides. She has a couple new horse buddies which she never fails to boss around and a wonderful mom who dotes on her.
Scarlett
23 Year Old
15 Hands
Gray Appaloosa
Mare

Although she has had congestive heart failure, she now can be ridden at a walk and trot in small increments as she becomes fit. Scarlett was sponsored in October 1998. Scarlett's adopter, Deborah Hall is very pleased with Scarlett. With proper vet care and an increase in Scarlett's exercise tolerance, she has made her adopter very happy, going on light trail rides.  Scarlett was sponsored out with Mickey, another Appy and they are very happy together, along with their adopters. Deborah currently volunteers at the farm and always brings us current pictures of her child "Scarlett" to keep us up to date on her antics.
XOXO
XOXO
15 Years Old
13.2 Hands
Palomino Halflinger
Mare

XOXO came to DEFHR as an owner give up. He bought her from the auction (New Holland) to give her a chance, but her bills were too costly to manage and he signed her over to us. She is incredibly sweet and loves kids grooming her! She is not rideable and has foundered in the past. She also has heaves that is controlled by medication.
