WHAT A BARGAIN!!
The SOS campaign has begun to help fund the geriatric or medically challenged
equines at DEFHR. Over the years, a number of horses have arrived at DEFHR
that, due to the abuse or neglect they suffered, may not be able to fill working
roles in the community. They can, however, fill roles as companions or pets.
Some horses in this program may be ridable to a limited extent. Many equines
included in this group have special medication needs and/or require multiple
feedings daily to continue their existence without suffering. The cost of maintaining
all these horses yearly at Days End is approximately $20,000 but may
vary from year to year because of their limitations, cost of medical care,
housing, or feeding requirements. It has become very difficult to find suitable
homes for these horses. We have devised two programs that we feel will help
meet the needs of these very special equine friends.
TLC/Assisted Living Program
The TLC/ALP is geared to help provide the necessary medical care, medication, feed, and housing to our seniors or medically challenged equines at satellite facilities. Participation in this program would require persons skilled in horse care with the time available to administer medication and/or multiple feedings daily. The participants in this program would be required to maintain expense accounts on the cost of caring for the horse they have chosen. The cost incurred for the care of this special horse is tax deductible and a letter stating the donation will be sent to all participants.
TLC/Home Care Provider Program
The TLC/HCP is geared to provide the necessary medical care, medication, feed, and housing to our seniors or medically challenged equines at DEFHR. Participation in this program would require full monetary funding to cover cost of medication, medical care, housing, and/or multiple feedings. Sponsors will also be expected to visit the horse regularly and tend to his/her grooming and emotional needs. Funding provided by the participants of this program would also be tax deductible. Participants will be billed with an itemization of expenses incurred monthly and should visit the horse on a regular basis to provide extra love and attention.
