Scrapper

Scrapper came to Days End Farm Horse Rescue, Inc. on October 26, 1995. The 17 year old quarterhorse had been starved nearly to death and had been unable to stand on her own for nearly 36 hours. Her muscles had been burned away for protein in her body's attempt to stay alive.

It took a dozen fire department and Days End Farm volunteers to lift her to her feet in a desperate attempt to return circulation to her limbs. She was named "Scrapper" because this was undoubtedly the fight for her life.

After an immediate veterinary exam and 19 liters of intravenous fluids to rehydrate the mare, medication was applied to her bleeding sores and hot compresses were used to soothe her swollen eyes. She was given all the hay she could eat (which she did continually), and a four-time-a-day feeding regiment.

Scrapper spent nearly 7 weeks on 24 hour care and held up by a sling, not having the strength to steady herself and unable to get up on her own when she fell or lay down from sheer exhaustion. We are proud to say that Scrapper is doing great and as of December 14, 1995 she had gained back enough muscle mass to stand on her own.

Scrapper was turned out into a small paddock and is well on her way to full recovery. We hope to have her under saddle by the end of April.

Based on the professional opinion of two veterinarians, Days End Farm Horse Rescue undertook the lengthy rehabilitation process required in Scrapper's case. The only medical problems that Scrapper was suffering from were malnutrition and dehydration. The end of her suffering had come with her first bite of food, her first sip of water and the love of her caretakers.

Scrapper passed on in September of 2001 but enjoyed many years of love and proper care. She also won quite a few ribbons and hearts at local shows. She had the heart of a champion!
