Rehabilitation Program

It takes a body of many hands-on volunteers of all ages and socioeconomic levels to assist in caring for and rehabilitating the 40 - 60+ horses on-site at DEFHR at any given time. The ultimate goal is to adopt these majestic creatures to new, loving homes. The level of abuse and neglect inflicted on some of the animals housed at the Farm is unspeakable. It is truly awe-inspiring to witness the lives of these horses literally turned around. In 2001 alone, DEFHR provided shelter to 110 horses, including several foals that were born on the farm after their pregnant mothers were impounded due to extreme starvation.

The Rescue and Rehabilitation Program is tailored for the needs of each horse. It begins when local government or quasi-governmental animal control officers seize one or more horses from an owner because of cruelty or neglect. Incoming horses are immediately placed in our critical care facility where they receive 24-hour monitoring and medical attention including veterinary visits, hoof care (farrier visits), medicines and vaccines, a specialized diet plan, grooming and emergency surgical procedures (if necessary). While the condition of each horse varies, most suffer from one or more of the following: starvation or malnutrition, parasite infestation, lack of medical care, physical abuse and painful or crippling ailments due to lack of proper hoof care. Once horses have graduated to an extended care and maintenance program, they are eligible for adoption to qualified, pre-screened homes.

The horses on the rehabilitation page are in the process of being rehabilitated and are not currently available for adoption!

Once a horses' rehabilitation is complete they will be moved to the Adoption or SOS Program and can be seen on those pages.

Isaac
3 Years Old
14.2 Hands
Bay Quarter Horse Cross
Gelding

Isaac came to us with Justice as a neglect/ abandonment case. They were tied to a pine tree in a swamp area in PG County. He quickly came around and following people around. He loves to be groomed and snuggled. He will make a great project for someone looking for a sweet and responsive horse. He is thin and will remain in the rehabilitation program until his physical condition improves.

Mare

Justice came to us with Issac as a neglect/ abandonment case. They were tied to a pine tree in a swamp area in PG County. She is very timid and afraid of people. We are slowly working on just being in her area without expectation. This mare needs lots of love and patience. She is thin and will remain in the rehabilitation program until her physical and mental condition improves.

THANK YOU to The Snyder Foundation for Animals!!
The rehabilitation of the horses at Days End Farm Horse Rescue is due in part to a $5000 grant in 2004 from The Snyder Foundation for Animals for our veterinary care expenses. The Snyder Foundation for Animals has partnered with DEFHR since 1993, to assist with providing quality care to horses in need. Since 1993 the foundation has donated approximately $50,000 to provide us with the resources necessary to provide the rehabilitation of the horses under our care.

Additional pictures of current DEFHR residents are available on our candid snapshots page.
