Kathy's Bio
Kathleen Schwartz-Howe is Board Chair and Co-Founder of Days End Farm Horse Rescue, a leading equine shelter for horses suffering from severe cruelty or neglect for 20 years. Kathy has produced a nationally distributed book entitled Guidelines for Establishing a Non Profit Rescue Facility that is available to others wishing to help rescue horses in their own community. Kathy has been involved in the Unwanted Horse Summitt helping to ensure a better life for horses. To this day She continues to view Days End Farm and its many donors, volunteers and friends as part of the solution for abandoned, abused and neglected horses and she looks forward to many continued years of helping horses with YOUR assistance!

Brooke Bierman-Vrany

Brooke Vrany, Assistant Director manages the Emergency Services and has seven years of experience in emergency rescue and dealing with sick, injured, and downed horses. Brooke is certified in Large Animal Rescue and has received training in the use of Large animal rescue equipment, Large animal rescue Lift systems and operations, scene management and operations, Trailers and trailers operation, Water rescue operations, night time animal rescue, biosecurity and zoonoses. She has been instrumental in saving the lives of many horses that found ways to put themselves in surreal situations, sometimes beyond belief.
Brooke has attended the Equine Investigators Academy which included seminars that taught; Role of animal cruelty investigator, laws and legal system, animal law, investigative procedures, interview and interrogation techniques, handling admissions and confessions, rules of evidence, rules of search and seizure, evidence documentation and testimony, report writing and case packaging, veterinarian and peripheral reports, crisis intervention and officer safety, case studies, presentations, hoof care, condition scoring, cardiac recovery index, trailer safety, transportation, loading and restraining, equine nutrition, colic, stress, trauma, disease, lameness, wound treatment and care, ranking second in her class.
Brooke has been involved with horses all her life and was a CHA Certified Instructor and has ridden, worked, shown and trained horses for many years and instructed in riding lesson programs and summer camp. She is a team player and has great management skills. We are very proud to have Brooke as a member of our team.

Erin Ochoa

Erin Ochoa is Days End Farm Horse Rescue's Director of Programs. Erin has been riding horses since she was 3 years old. She grew up with active involvement in the U.S. Pony Club and U.S. Dressage Federation Young Riders. She is an Advanced Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor through the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association and is a member of the Equine Facilitated Mental Health Association. She has attended numerous clinics in equine care and horse training.
Erin has a background in business and has worked as a Human Resource Manager and Marketing Director. In addition, she worked as a veterinarian technician for 3 years while attending college. She has a college degree in Education. Erin and her husband own a farm in Washington County and currently have 6 horses of their own.

Erin's job duties at Days End Farm includes the oversight of the care, maintenance, treatment and management of the horses at Days End, training and evaluation of horses, volunteers and adopters, management of Barn Manager, volunteers and program participants. She also assists with the educational programs and helps to maintain horse records.

Susan Mitchell
Sue Mitchell is the Director of Development at Day’s End Farm Horse Rescue. She comes to DEFHR with two decades experience in local 501 (c) (3) nonprofit development including fundraising, communications, marketing, public relations and graphic design. Sue is also an avid horse lover.
She took her first riding lesson at six and was hooked. Sue remembers the many life lessons she learned growing up with a variety of equine friends ranging from mischievous ponies to sweet retirees to hot headed dressage mounts. Sue is also an animal welfare advocate and volunteers for feline and wildlife rescue organizations.
Sue’s scope of responsibilities include proposal writing for grants/corporate partners, soliciting sponsorships for and planning our fundraising events, spreading the word through our many CFC booths, coordinating our Development Committee and soliciting Major Gifts.

Lea Gilbert

Lea joined the Days End Farm staff full time as our Administrative Assistant in September of 2005 and moved into the Office Manager position in 2008. She is a certified bookkeeper with over 20 years of experience. Her duties here at the farm are varied, and include bookkeeping, answering the phone, data entry, correspondence include managing the day to day administration of the office, bookkeeping, database accuracy, mailings, overseeing the office volunteers, helping with event coordination and assisting the staff and Executive Director in any area needed. Lea came to the farm with a desire to help the horses and hopes to help further educate the public about the great work that is being done here. She wears “many hats” and is very excited about her future with Days End Farm Horse Rescue.

DeEtte Gorrie

DeEtte is Days End Farm's Volunteer Coordinator. She has been with Days End Farm since April of 2003 and accended quickly to a leadership position on our training team. DeEtte shows remarkable people and organization skills and was hired on staff in February 2007 as our Volunteer Coordinator. DeEtte is a true asset to our team and works well to help us meet the needs of both the horses and the volunteers.

Brittney Carow

Brittany is currently the Farm Manager at Days End Farm Horse Rescue and directs our Internship Program. She origionally volunteered at Days End Farm when she was 12 years old and continued on for many years until college. Brittany was hired in 2007 after she graduated from the University of Maryland's Equestion Program with a degree in Equine Science. We are very glad to have her back as she is a huge asset to our programs. Brittney job includes hands on care, maintenance, treatment and management of the horses at Days End, training and evaluation of horses, volunteers and adopters, management of Barn Staff, volunteers and program participants. She also helps to maintain horse records.
