2008 Calendar of Events

Monthly Volunteer Orientations - Held from 11-1 pm on the second Saturday of every month at our farm. All attendees wishing to participate in the hands-on session must wear closed toe shoes or boots. Youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their Parent or legal guardian to attend the orientation. Youths 12 years and older may volunteer without a parent after attending the orientation. Children under 12 may volunteer if a parent volunteers by their side and provides supervision at all times. Volunteering at Days End Farm is a wonderful family experience. Make it a Family Event!!

    Are you prepared for a Natural Disaster? Find out how to plan now for the future health and safety of your horses. Days End Farm Horse Rescue was on the scene rescuing horses and other animals in the aftermath of both Hurricane Katrina and Rita. It was obvious that many people and animals had not prepared. As a result, disaster preparedness has risen to the top of many of priority lists. A natural disaster CAN happen to you, remember… it may be too late to prepare once you’ve received the call to evacuate.

    Large Animal Rescue Basics
    Do you know what to do if your horse is cast in a stall, or the horse is down and can’t get up? What about if the horse is stuck in mud and can’t get out? Many times you don’t have time for a rescue professional to arrive at the scene to help your horse. Be prepared now! After this short course, you can help the horse yourself with some basic knowledge and equipment you already have around the farm. (This course is done using our rescue equipment and a plastic horse.)

March 29, 2008 - "Grapes of Hooves," Days End's Spring Wine Tasting and Live Auction will be held at the Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville, MD. on March 29,2008 at 7:00 pm. - Tickets will be $65.00 each. Please bring friends and family for good food which equals good fun and "Helps all our horses who are in need!"

April 19-20, 2008 - Horse Care Clinic - Level I & II. Held from 8:30am-4:00pm at our farm. Hands-On Clinic for Long time horse owners, firt time horse owners and those planning to buy a horse in the future! Topics lectured by Equine Professional Instructors and include; Vitals & Body Condition Scoring, Management & Feeding, What to do before the vet arrives and much more. June 7, 2008 - 10 am to 4 pm - Volunteer Clean up day & Cookout!!
Food, Fun & Camaraderie ! Join us for this team building event! Volunteers help us bring the farm back to it's Spring Shine just in time for the Spring Open House. We need your help!!. Contact Deette Gorrie, our Volunteer Coordinator to sign up for this fun event: deette@defhr.org Chores may include but are not limited to the following;

  • Painting the buildings, stalls, arena etc...
  • Scrubbing the walls of the horses stalls and outbuildings
  • Mending buildings, fences etc.
  • Power washing the arena we use for turnout for the horses
  • Many other jobs that could not be done throughout the winter months

Cookout starts after all the hard work From 4 pm to Whenever! Days End provides a backyard barbeque as a thank you for all who participated. Door Prizes will also be awarded. Come join us for the fun.

July 16-17, 2008 - Equine Cruelty Investigators Seminar / LART Training Held from 9am-4pm at our farm. The Equine Cruelty Investigation Seminars were designed to help cruelty investigators feel confident working with and handling equines. Any cruelty investigator that does not work with horses on a regular basis would benefit from this instruction. Investigators completing this course become more self assured around horses, have a better understanding of the equine mind, and are better prepared to determine if their needs are being met. All participants completing this day of training receive a certificate of completion. Topics covered in this seminar include the following: Tour of DEFHR Facility ,Case Histories, Horse Handling and Safety , Hoof Anatomy and Hoof Problems, Use of Height and Weight Tapes , Color and Breed identification, Dental Care of Equines , Trailering Tips, Body Condition Scoring, Examination for Illness and Injury, Minimum Horse Care Standards, The Link - Animal Abuse and Violence Against People, Large Animal Rescue Training.
