Girl Scout "Horse Lovers" badge: $20.00 per child
This activity includes the following:

- Tour of DEFHR along with stories about the horses, their neglect, and why it happened.
- General talk on proper care of a horse including, but not limited to, hoof care, teeth care, grooming, and nutrition.
- Hands on grooming session for the Girl Scouts including discussion of the common parts of the horse and different breeds.
- A tacking session where the girls are shown how to tack a horse and the names of the different equipment used. Western and English tack is used.
- A short riding lesson over a designated course at a walk and a trot. This riding is done on a lead and, if the children want, off the lead.
- Information materials about DEFHR are distributed to the scouts including our newsletter and program information.

This is a two hour activity, held on Saturdays from 1 pm to 3 pm.
We also require a release form (19 K pdf) to be signed by the participants and their parents.
Children are required to wear helmets (Bike helmets can be substituted)and low heeled shoes or boots. Shoes can not be slip ons. DEFHR requires a minimum notice of four weeks to schedule this activity. All Girl Scouts who complete the program at DEFHR receive a Days End Patch. Please keep in mind that the schedule fills quickly over the spring and summer months.
