DEFHR will send one of our volunteers to your school, civic organization, or club to explain about what DEFHR, as a humane organization, is doing to ensure the quality care and treatment of horses.

"Share A Heart" - School Program: Donations Appreciated but not required

Lesson Plan:

  • A. Purpose of Days End Farm Horse Rescue
  • B. History of the Farm
  • C. Examples of Abuse versus Neglect
  • D. Explain about the Cycle of Violence
    1. Define the difference between abuse and neglect
    2. Go over causes and types
      • Abuse - where humans inflict pain or damage
      • Neglect - starvation, parasites, lack of care and grooming
  • D. Visual Aids
    1. Pictures
    2. Props - hooves, teeth, skull, etc.
    3. Explanation to accompany props of diseases and problems that are a result of poor care
  • E. Discuss components of proper horse care
    1. Food
    2. Medical considerations
    3. Grooming
    4. Exercise
    5. Training
  • F. Show Days End Farm video
  • G. Question and Answer Session to follow video
    1. Comparison of wild and domesticated horses
    2. Discuss rehabilitation and adoption process
  • H. Explain how horses come to Days End Farm
    1. List programs offered by Days End Farm
    2. Discuss what the student can do as a citizen and/or a horse owner to report cases of neglect and abuse
    3. Volunteering for the Farm
    4. Optional - get together with classmates to do a group project
  • I. Discuss the option for an entire class to Foster Care one of the horses
  • J. Arrange for the class to visit the Farm for a tour and "farm day"
  • N.B. · Each lesson plan is tailored to the class' theme or grade level
  • Seminars / lectures can last anywhere from ½ hour to 1 hour

  • DEFHR brings all hand-outs, visual aids
  • Classes taught by certified professional from DEFHR
