Guidelines for Establishing a Horse Rescue Facility

Thank you for your interest in starting a rescue facility. We have worked very hard for a number of years to see these guidelines to completion. It is our hope that through the publication of these guidelines that we can help other humane individuals interested in starting a horse rescue to become aware of the expense and the time involved in this endeavor as well as to provide them with any materials we have at our disposal to start them on the road to success.

We are currently asking for a donation of $100.00 for our book entitled Guidelines for Establishing a Horse Rescue

Click here for a list of forms and topics included in this manual.

As this is the first publication of its kind concerning the rescue of horses,we would appreciate any comments or suggestions you may have. We do not have all the answers, and every day is a brand new learning experience. However, we are willing to share what we do know if it will help to better the lives of more horses everywhere. < p>Consultations

We also offer consultation services with Kathleen Schwartz-Howe, the Founder, at the rate of $50.00 an hour at our facility. Typical consultations take a few hours minimum.

Part II - H.E.R.O.'s for Horses

Days End Farm Horse Rescue launches Part II of

H.E.R.O’s for Horses Program in Texas - 3/18/2011

Days End Farm Horse Rescue, Inc. (“Days End”) is pleased to announce our collaboration with the Doris Day Horse Rescue and Adoption Center at the Fund for Animal's, Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch by bringing our H.E.R.O’s (Helping Equine Rescue Organizations) for Horses Program to Murchison, Texas.

Six months ago Days End assisted the Berkley County West Virginia Sherriff’s Department with a seizure of 56 horses and two young bovine from the operator of an equine rescue facility gone horribly wrong. The animals were found with little or nothing to eat and no water available to drink. Seven of the horses had already died and another had to be euthanized after it was discovered slowly dying in the field and beyond help.

As a result of that situation and the hundreds of other impounds that Days End has assisted with in the past we felt an even greater need to educate and assist other horse rescue facilities where needed. With the introduction of Part II of our H.E.R.O.’s for Horses program, Days End offers training and advice based on our years of experience with hands on management of a horse rescue facility. In this way we hope to assist rescues before there is a problem.

With 21 years of experience Days End knows well the many stumbling blocks that need to be hurdled in starting a rescue. We know firsthand how many horses need to be helped and we know we cannot even begin to help them all. Knowing your limits is a key to your success. As a result of this need Kathleen Howe, Executive Director of Days End along with key staff recognized the need and created Part I of our H.E.R.O’s for Horses program in 1991 with the introduction of our “Rescue Kit,” a manual written to help others learn how to start a horse rescue facility. Over the years hundreds of these “Rescue Kits” were ordered and one on one consultations have been given at the Days End facility to help people interested in starting a horse rescue.

We hope with the introduction of Part II of our H.E.R.O.’s for Horses program, in which we offer our expertise with hands on management onsite at their horse rescue facilities we can better assist rescues in the day to day operations of their particular rescue based on their individual needs and resources.

H.E.R.O.’s for Horses, Part II Topics may include: quarantine and decontamination practices, intake evaluation for health and handling, recordkeeping, field layout, re-feeding horses, training horses, herd management, and much, much more!
