DEFHR Staff Position Description Title: Assistant Farm Manager

Purpose of Position: To maintain the facility and animals in such a manner as to insure that all needs (physical, mental, health and safety) of the horses are met. To effectively recruit, maintain and coordinate volunteer staff. To administer necessary medical treatment to animals and maintain medical records.

    Responsibilities:
  • Volunteer & Paid Staff coordination (i.e.: knowledge of volunteers and staff’s ability & availability, coordinating schedules, matching volunteers and staff with appropriate tasks, recording accident/injury report, settling disputes, ensuring that all daily tasks are completed safely and efficiently, fulfilling needs in the presence and absence of volunteer staff, Thanking staff & volunteers, prioritizing tasks and needs)
  • Maintaining positive morale
  • Assisting in identifying and interpreting medical problems (i.e.: abscess, hematoma, founder, cuts, disease, and behavior variations...)
  • Assisting in administering medical care, including but not limited to, soaking and wrapping hooves, injections, working with farrier, dentist and veterinarian...
  • Assist with Inventory control (medical supplies, bedding, feed, etc...)Advise the Farm Manager of needs.
  • Assist with Feed management (preparation and distribution)
  • Maintaining facility in a clean and safe fashion to ensure safety and positive appearance (walkways, cobwebs, arena, etc...)
  • Assist with Directing maintenance technician as to items/areas in need of maintenance and repair, (i.e., stalls, fencing, taps, etc...)Doing Maintenance jobs in the absence of the Maintenance technician under the direction of the Farm Manager.
  • Ensuring that all animals have access to clean, fresh water at all times.
  • Maintaining stalls (i.e., clean fresh bedding, clean, fresh water, free of debris and contaminants, etc...)
  • Assist with Orienting new volunteers to ensure safety and competence of volunteer staff and animals.
  • Assist in maintaining farm records.
  • Assist in evaluating prospective adopters, sponsors or fostercare participants on their ability to work with the horse they specify.
  • Attending and participating in volunteer orientation to meet new volunteers and facilitate scheduling.
  • Give tours.
  • Maintain souvenir and tack shop.
  • Assist visitors with souvenir and tack items.
  • Represent DEFHR in a professional and acceptable manner.
  • Assist with scheduling volunteers for daily chores and special events.
  • Act as a liaison between volunteers and staff and maintain open and communicative relations.
  • Assist with handling volunteer conflicts and complaints.
  • Ensure proper handling (with lead ropes) and control or horses per instruction from the farrier, dentist or veterinarian.
  • Assist in triage (emergency medical care) as necessary.
  • Assist in coordinating and instructing onsite educational programs.
  • Ensuring the safety and well being of all volunteers, staff and animals.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Farm manager, Executive Director, or Director of Programs and Emergency Services.

Qualifications/training required:

  • Previous, hands-on experience with equine, including
  • handling, management, care, and husbandry
  • Physical ability to perform manual, sometimes demanding, labor.
  • Must have ability to foster positive working relationships.
  • Must be willing to ensure completion of necessary tasks in the absence of volunteer staff.
  • Provide own transportation.
  • Must be dependable and ON TIME
  • Excellent organization and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Office

Time Required: Salaried position, 40+ plus hrs week. Must be available for Volunteer Orientation days and Special events (Open House, Fall Festival, March Event & Holiday Party) and help set up the night before (6-10pm). One weekend day is required. Salary: Full time Position, $25,000 yr. Work week runs from Monday through Sunday. Paydays are on Monday.

Salary Increases: As determined by the Board of Directors, as recommended by the president and as funding becomes available.

Scope of Authority: Volunteer staff

Working Relationships: Volunteer Staff, Farm Manager, Executive Director, Director of Programs and Emergency Services, Outreach Coordinator, Office Staff, Maintenance Technician.

Available Resources: All items required for appropriate maintenance of facility and care of animals.
